American voters need to show up to the polls. Without broad participation, the Congress is not a true representation of the electorate. It is interesting to note that the party with the most votes since the year 2000 has almost always been ….the people who do not vote. The percentage of people who fail to vote usually hovers between 35 and 50 percent, where-as the winning and losing electors generate less numbers- around 25- 45% of the public.
It is truly amazing when one participates in the election, how difficult it is to get accurate voting information and available voting locations. It is truly amazing how many citizens are living life in a frenzy because they are a working single mother or beleaguered family father trying to keep it all together. So many people - particularly the young - do not vote because they are busy working. They are in truth the voices that we need to hear from as they are the middle class and working class.
From my observations as an election worker I think we should have a mandatory 2 hour break on November 4th for workers to perform their constitutionally mandated right to vote. To me it is woefully inadequate to say that we all have the right to vote but make it impossible for many working class and single parents to do so.
November 4th should be a national holiday and a federal holiday. It will increase voting numbers and allow people to actually exercise their constitutional right to vote. Why it has never been a federal holiday when Labor Day is a holiday is beyond my comprehension.
Naturally the election workers need to work on those days. But with more people available to do the work it could be a celebration of our joint responsibilities and more of the public could participate much as they do in other countries.
I also think that it is much more reasonable to have election results released on the following day, November 5th, at a specific time. Logically we should promote the best quality of service possible in election workers . This requires many break times and rest.
Voters in Hawaii and Alaska should not hear the news organizations call the election before they vote. Imagine if the vote was in the opposite direction and the entire East Coast had to endure a decision before their input. It clearly discourages voting, and I am not convinced that this actually constitutional.
Many workers in the private sector would be better at their work on Fatigue Friday.
Finally, this allows time to recheck results and catch up if there are problems rather than televising issues and creating avenues for misinformation and distrust. It will make the process more sane and reasonable.
